She yawned, narrow jaws opening wide to reveal rows of sharp, uneven teeth. Those jaws closed slowly, stopping short of the teeth clicking together as she lazily stalked the fawn. Its mother was dead, Zombie knew because she had been the one to kill her. She had eaten her fill and left what remained for the scavengers to find; now she was alleviating her boredom by stalking the unknowing little fawn. He was too young to be away from his mother, and he would soon die without her to care for him. Until then, he was Zombie's. Movement in her peripheral vision made Zombie turn her head just slightly, and she saw a herd of deer grazing a half-mile away. She was downwind of them, so her scent would not frighten them off, and as she watched them, it occurred to her that if she had only gone a short distance further, she could have picked off one of the older herd deer and the little fawn would still have a mother. Oh, how cruel life could be. She snorted softly; it didn't matter now, what was done was done, and she doubted she would have changed her course even if she had known the herd was nearby. That doe was so plump and juicy.
The fawn wandered stilt-legged over to the splitting carcass of a tree, charred and black from a long ago lightning strike. He settled himself between two gnarled roots and rested his head on one, his ears swivelling back and forth, his dark eyes peering out into the world with a confused, forlorn look that could only be interpreted as 'Mommy?' Zombie almost felt a pang of guilt, and then she did feel a pang of guilt, sharp and cruel and sparking a weird maternal instinct. But the fawn was not a wolf, it was a deer, and deer were food, not surrogate offspring. She shook her body violently, as if shaking her fur loose would in turn shake loose the guilt and affection she felt. The fawn heard the dull thumping of her shaking flesh, and leapt clumsily to his feet before dashing away, staggering and tripping the whole time. Sighing, Zombie watched him go; there went her entertainment, but perhaps, with those last few thoughts, that was a good thing. She swished her tail in annoyance and turned away from the running fawn, trotting back towards the copse where his mother lay rotting.
She didn't stop by the corpse, but kept going, inhaling the scent of blood and flesh and not caring. She was tired, but she didn't want to sleep; sleeping brought nightmares. She didn't want to get too close to the pack lands either; the last thing she wanted was to deal with other wolves. So she made her way along the edge of the plains, turning occasionally to watch deer or elk as they roamed the wide spaces, or to watch the birds sail through the pale blue sky. Her violet eyes stood out in shocking contrast to her ebony fur as she gazing all around her, unsure of what it was she was looking for. Shortly, she found a large, flat boulder sunk into the ground. She leapt lightly onto it, her black tail swishing like a cat's, the purple rings flashing in the sun. She laid herself down on the stone, stretching out to warm herself in the sunlight.
